The “Sugar Summit” took place in the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 13th October to debate & discuss ways of promoting the consumption of healthier food and drink.

Organised by “Sugarwise” – the kitemark for sugar claims in food and drink – the Summit brought together 135 movers & shakers with an interest in issues around obesity, diabetes and sugar. Attendees included food & drink manufacturers, nutritionists, health campaigners, charities, retailers, health professionals, parliamentarians and public sector. The event was chaired by the RT Hon Keith Vaz MP, who leads the All Party Parliamentary Group for Diabetes.

The distinguished panel of speakers included Tam Fry (National Obesity Forum), Dr Aseem Malhotra (Consultant Cardiologist), Jenny Rosborough (Action on Sugar) and Maurice Newton (CBL Drinks).

Rend Platings, founder of Sugarwise, explained the fast progress made in the UK since the launch of the scheme in March, with over 300 food & drink brands already certified. She also quoted some impressive independent statistics from Research Engine’s new market research demonstrating the growth in recognition of the scheme among consumers and their feelings about it.

“Recent independent research on the marque has revealed it has already achieved an estimated recognition of 21% across the UK…43% (of those who recognized the logo) say they have already bought a product bearing the Sugarwise logo…24% of respondents would be willing to switch retailers to get a Sugarwise certified product. This shows there is real hope for positive initiatives on sugar reduction, and I hope that we can all work together to create a better future for our children”.
